Trance is a subgenre of Dance and unfolded itself in the early 90’s. This music style developed itself when DJs started experimenting and combining techno with rock-, disco- en New Age music. Several streams were created because of these combinations: hardtrance, Goa-trance, progressive trance, eurodance and happy hardcore. Trance as we know it today was in those days predominantly listened to in the underground scene by only a small group of people. Famous producer names in those days were DJ Dag, Jam El Mar, Mark Spoon and Cosmic Baby.
One of the first break-through trance records that attracted a main stream audience was Power of American Natives by Dance 2 Trance.
Once the Hardtrance / Happy Hardcore hype from the mid 90’s was over, slower forms of trance also started to gain popularity with the bigger audiences in Holland, Belgium and Germany. Hits by the likes of Robert Miles - Children, BBE - Seven Days & One Week en Energy 52 - Café Del Mar were mainly responsible for this. In 1999 however trance really became immensely popular when it was given a face by the now world famous DJs Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten.
