History of Electro

This music style reared its head for the first time at the end of the 1960s. German bands like Can (Krautrock) played a large part in this but the famous German band Kraftwerk and the Japanese Yellow Magic Orchestra are responsible for the very well known dry electronic sound of Electro that could be heard at the beginning and mid seventies.

The actual name ‘Electro’’ comes from Japan and is a variant on the German appelation of electonic music (elektrischen klangmusik).

In the early eighties Electro Funk was hugely popular. Electro Funk is a subgenre of Electro and is basically a combination of German/Japanese Electro with American Funk.

Other Electro subgenres are electro hop, Miami Bass, freestyle, techno bass, ghettotech en breakdance-muziek (Electro Boogie). This style of music has also had huge influence on techno and breakbeat.

The typical Electro sound is characterized by the always prominent sound of the Roland TR-808 and Roland TR-909 drum computers and the robotic voice distorted by using a vocoder.
